Gambling stream viewership on Twitch, before and after the 2022 rule

These figures show the scale of slots streaming on Twitch before its October 2022 rule, and Twitch's own estimate of the drop after it.

  • 45 million hours: hours watched in Twitch's Slots category in July 2022, a record at the time; by August 2022 Slots accounted for 2.7% of all Twitch hours watched, up from under 1% at the start of 2021 (Streams Charts, 11 August 2022).
  • 66,000: average viewers of Slots streams on Twitch by August 2022, more than seven times the 9,000 average in January 2019 (Streams Charts).
  • 308 million+ hours: hours watched in Twitch's Slots category from January to September 2022, enough to rank among Twitch's ten most watched categories (Streams Charts, 4 August 2023).
  • About 75%: drop in gambling viewership that Twitch said it saw after its October 2022 policy took effect, stated in August 2023 (Associated Press, 2 August 2023). This is Twitch's own figure, not a tracker measurement.
  • 6.2%: share of CS:GO watch time on Twitch in July 2023 that came from case-opening streams or streams promoting skin gambling sites, just before Twitch banned skin gambling sponsorships on 2 August 2023 (Streams Charts).

Kick's growth and the wider live streaming market

Trackers measure different platform sets with their own methods. Compare figures from the same tracker only.

  • 4.5 billion hours: hours watched on Kick in 2025, up 131% year over year (Stream Hatchet 2025 Yearly Live Streaming Trends Report).
  • 36.4 billion hours: live streaming hours watched in 2025 across the platforms Stream Hatchet tracks, up 6% on 2024, including 8.8 billion hours on YouTube Gaming (Stream Hatchet).
  • 2.04 billion hours: hours watched on Kick in Q3 2026, up 30.7% on the previous quarter, a 6.4% share of watch time across the platforms Streams Charts tracks (Streams Charts, 13 October 2026).
  • 4.51 billion and 13.62 billion hours: hours watched on Twitch and YouTube in Q3 2026, shares of 14.2% and 43%, out of 31.698 billion hours across tracked platforms that include TikTok LIVE (Streams Charts).
  • 773.8 million hours: hours watched on Kick in September 2026, its highest monthly total at the time, with about 1.09 million average viewers (Streams Charts, 2 October 2026).
  • 93%: month-on-month rise in hours watched for Kick's Gambling genre in September 2026, which moved up three places to seventh among Kick's genres (Streams Charts).

Stream Hatchet's annual total and Streams Charts' quarterly totals cover different platforms, so do not set them side by side. For platform choice, see Kick streamer sponsorship management and the Twitch vs Kick gambling sponsorship comparison.

Platform policy dates for gambling streams

Each platform now sets its own gambling rules. These are the dates and terms reported at the time; check the current policy before a stream goes live.

  • 18 October 2022: date Twitch's ban took effect on streaming slots, roulette or dice sites not licensed in the US or other jurisdictions with sufficient consumer protection; Twitch announced it on 20 September 2022, named Stake.com, Rollbit.com, Duelbits.com and Roobet.com, and kept sports betting, fantasy sports and poker allowed (NPR, 22 September 2022).
  • $200,000: amount streamer Sliker reportedly obtained from people to fund his gambling, the case that preceded Twitch's 2022 rule (NPR, citing Kotaku).
  • 6 sites: named on Twitch's prohibited list after it added Blaze and Gamdom on 2 August 2023 to the four sites banned in October 2022 (Associated Press).
  • February 2025: month from which Kick allows gambling streams only from sites that verify viewers' identity with ID checks, announced on 3 December 2024 (SBC News).
  • 19 March 2025: date YouTube began enforcing rules that bar content directing viewers to unapproved gambling sites through links, images, text, logos or verbal references, and that age-restrict content promoting online casinos so under-18s and signed-out users cannot view it (CNN via ABC11, 5 March 2025).

Regulation numbers: UK, Ontario and Brazil

Market rules decide whether a gambling stream can run at all. Amounts for Ontario are Canadian dollars.

  • 1 October 2022: date UK advertising rules began banning gambling ads likely to be of strong appeal to under-18s, which restricts the use of sports people, celebrities and social media influencers popular with that age group (ASA and CAP, announced 5 April 2022).
  • 36 ads: gambling ads removed after the ASA reviewed nearly 10,000 pieces of content in four weeks of monitoring around the 2026 FIFA World Cup, taking issues up with seven advertisers (ASA, 16 July 2026).
  • £5 and £2: maximum stake per online slots game cycle in Great Britain: £5 for adults from 9 April 2025 and £2 for adults aged 18 to 24 from 21 May 2025 (Gambling Commission).
  • 28 February 2024: date Ontario banned athletes from igaming advertising and restricted celebrities and social media influencers likely to appeal to minors (AGCO, announced 29 August 2023).
  • 49 operators and 84 gaming sites: in Ontario's regulated igaming market in April 2025; in its third year, April 2024 to March 2025, the market took $82.7 billion in wagers, $69.6 billion of it on casino games (iGaming Ontario, April 2025).
  • 91.1%: share of Ontario online gamblers surveyed by Ipsos who played on regulated sites in the market's fourth year, when wagers passed $103 billion (iGaming Ontario, 21 May 2026).
  • 78 operators and 182 brands: licensed in Brazil in the first half of 2025, when 17.7 million people bet with them (iGaming Business, reporting SPA data, 26 August 2025).
  • 25 September 2026: date of Brazil's Provisional Measure 1.394/2026, which prohibits the offer and advertising of fixed-odds betting, including online games, and ends existing authorisations 30 days after publication (Planalto). The 2025 Brazil figures above describe the market before this measure.

Audience age data

Few platforms publish the age of gambling stream audiences. These are the closest published measures.

  • 46%: share of 11 to 17 year olds in Great Britain who saw gambling adverts at least weekly on platforms such as Twitch or YouTube (Gambling Commission), from a survey of 3,666 pupils run January to June 2025 (Young People and Gambling 2025, 13 November 2025).
  • 31%: share of the young people who follow gambling content on social media (16% of respondents) who said influencers had advertised gambling content to them (Gambling Commission).
  • 79%: share of 11 to 17 year olds who recalled seeing or hearing gambling adverts or promotions through at least one source (Gambling Commission).
  • Nearly 70%: share of Twitch viewers aged 18 to 34, based on Twitch internal global data from 2022; Twitch also cites an average of 105 million monthly visitors, from 2023 data (Twitch Ads).
  • 22.4%: share of Brazil's licensed-market bettors aged 18 to 25 in the first half of 2025; bettors aged 31 to 40 made up 27.8% (iGaming Business, reporting SPA data).

Gambling streams are for adults only. Ask for a creator's audience age split before booking and exclude channels with a large under-18 audience.

Responsible gambling research on gambling streams

Research on gambling streams is recent and mostly survey or interview based. It shows associations, not proof that streams cause harm.

  • 221 viewers and 642 non-viewers: compared in a 2024 study of people who gamble: stream viewers were younger, more often men, and showed higher problem gambling severity and cravings; a second study of 271 viewers linked problem gambling severity with cravings triggered by streams (Wu, Abarbanel and Clark, Journal of Behavioral Addictions, 2024).
  • 350 viewers and 25 channels: surveyed and observed on Twitch and Kick in a University of Sydney study; most viewers said streams made them more likely to gamble, and streams often linked to gambling sites (University of Sydney, 2 April 2025).
  • 15 young adults: in the UK who regularly watch gambling livestreams, interviewed for a Swansea University study; participants described using streams to manage urges while also feeling stronger urges, and reported gambling more as a result of viewing (Hughes and others, Addiction Research and Theory, vol. 34, 2026).

For a sponsor, the practical step is to treat responsible gambling messaging, age gating and honest win and loss display as part of the brief, not an add-on.

How to use these numbers

Cite the original publisher and the period measured, and link to it. A figure without its date is easy to misread in a market where rules changed in 2022, 2025 and 2026.

Do not add or rank figures from different trackers. Stream Hatchet and Streams Charts count different platforms, and Twitch's 75% figure is a company statement.

Check the market before you plan. A viewership number says nothing about whether a stream can legally reach viewers in your licensed markets. Our guide to casino streamer sponsorship cost covers how to budget once the market is clear.

Methodology

We checked every source on 20 October 2026 and kept only figures printed on the source page itself. We preferred regulators, platform statements, tracker reports and academic papers over affiliate sites.

We excluded overnight viewer snapshots, paywalled tracker charts we could not read and figures we found only second-hand. Dates in brackets are publication dates; the period each figure measures is given in the text.

Frequently asked questions

How much gambling content was on Twitch before the 2022 ban?

Streams Charts recorded 45 million hours watched in Twitch's Slots category in July 2022 and more than 308 million hours from January to September 2022, and Slots made up 2.7% of Twitch hours watched by August 2022. Twitch said gambling viewership fell by roughly 75% after its October 2022 rule.

How big is Kick compared with Twitch and YouTube?

In Q3 2026 Streams Charts counted 2.04 billion hours watched on Kick, a 6.4% share of tracked live watch time, against 4.51 billion on Twitch and 13.62 billion on YouTube. Stream Hatchet put Kick at 4.5 billion hours for 2025, up 131% on 2024.

What are the platform rules for gambling streams?

Twitch's ban on streaming unlicensed slots, roulette and dice sites took effect on 18 October 2022. Kick's rule limiting gambling streams to sites that verify viewers with ID applied from February 2025. YouTube began enforcing its ban on directing viewers to unapproved gambling sites, and age restrictions on online casino promotion, on 19 March 2025. Check current terms before any stream.

How many young people see gambling content on streaming platforms?

In the Gambling Commission's 2025 survey of 3,666 pupils aged 11 to 17 in Great Britain, 46% saw gambling adverts at least weekly on platforms such as Twitch or YouTube. Of the 16% who follow gambling content on social media, 31% said influencers had advertised gambling to them.

Does watching gambling streams affect gambling behaviour?

Studies so far show associations rather than cause. A 2024 study found gambling stream viewers had higher problem gambling severity and cravings than non-viewers, and in a University of Sydney survey most viewers said streams made them more likely to gamble. Gambling content is for adults only.
