The four buying models
| Model | How it works | Example | What you control |
|---|---|---|---|
| Open marketplace | Browse creator profiles, post a brief, pick from the creators who respond | Collabstr | Creator choice, brief and approval |
| Fixed package | Pay a set price for a set number of posts across pre-selected channels | Coinzilla KOL Spotlight | Budget and the creatives you supply |
| Hybrid platform with escrow | Curated roster, a strategy call, creator fees held until delivery | Lever | Shortlist approval and timing |
| Managed agency | The agency plans, casts, briefs, reviews and reports; you approve | 3betmedia and others | Objectives and approvals |
What each example publishes about itself, as checked on 15 October 2026:
- Collabstr shows about 2,100 crypto creators across Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and X. Creators quote when they respond to a brief, and Collabstr holds payment until you approve the work.
- Coinzilla KOL Spotlight sells three packages: Starter at EUR 1,999 for 5 posts and 1 video review, Premium at EUR 4,999 for 11 posts and 2 video reviews, and Ultimate at EUR 9,999 for 18 posts and 5 video reviews, each with a published estimated audience.
- Lever describes itself as a hybrid of platform and agency, claims more than 500 vetted KOLs, and says all creator payments go through escrow so you only pay for delivered work.
Roster sizes and audiences are each provider's own claims. We have not audited them.
When an open marketplace works
Marketplaces are fast and price-visible. You see who is available, you can run a small test without a retainer, and payment protection is built in.
They work best when the brief is simple and the audience is mainstream: a card, a consumer app, a product with an easy demo. They struggle with crypto-native audiences on X and Telegram, where many effective accounts never list on general marketplaces.
They also do not check the law for you. A creator listed under crypto does not mean the platform allows the post: TikTok's branded content policy lists financial services among prohibited categories, and UK crypto promotions need a lawful approval route. The marketplace connects you to the creator. The rule check stays with you.
When a fixed package works
A package removes almost every decision. You pay, supply creatives and get a schedule of posts. That is useful for an awareness burst around a listing or an event, when speed matters more than exactly who posts.
The trade-off is choice. Coinzilla's package page publishes channels, post counts and estimated audiences but not the individual creators, so you cannot check audience geography before buying. Ask for the channel list, results on similar projects and the disclosure each channel will use.

When a hybrid escrow platform works
Hybrid platforms sit between a marketplace and an agency. You get a curated roster and someone to plan with, and escrow protects you when a post never appears.
Escrow protects delivery, not quality. A post can go out on time and still reach the wrong market, carry no disclosure or drive no actions. Ask how the platform defines delivery, who checks content before release, and what data you receive per creator.
When a managed agency works
An agency earns its fee when the work needs judgement: mixed creator roles, several markets with different rules, iGaming or financial products where one wrong post costs more than the campaign, and reporting that has to reconcile with your own data.
The weak points are price visibility and speed. Many agencies quote only after a call, and a June 2026 roundup by FORKOFF, itself an agency, estimated several managed providers at $5,000 a month or more. Ask for a line-item split between creator fees and agency fees. Our crypto KOL cost guide shows how those lines are built, and our comparison of crypto KOL agencies covers how to compare providers on scope.
Which model to start with
| Your situation | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Mainstream consumer product, one market, small test budget | Open marketplace | Price-visible and quick, with payment held until approval |
| Listing or event, awareness is the goal, creatives ready | Fixed package | Fast and predictable, with less control over who posts |
| Crypto-native product, curated roster wanted without a full retainer | Hybrid platform | Curation plus escrow; check how delivery is defined |
| Several markets, a regulated product, or iGaming | Managed agency | Rule checks, casting and reporting are the hard part |
| Repeat campaigns with creators already proven | Direct deals, managed or in-house | You know who works; keep the paperwork tight |
Whichever model you choose, keep three things in-house: the conversion definition, the tracking data and the final approval of every claim. Our KOL due diligence checklist works with all four.
Questions to ask any provider
- Can I see the exact creators and their native audience data before paying?
- Who checks each post for disclosure and market rules before it goes live?
- How is a delivered post defined, and what happens if it is late, edited or deleted?
- What share of my spend goes to creators, and what share to the platform or agency?
- What data do I get per creator, and can I reconcile it with my own analytics?
If the answers point to a managed model, see our crypto KOL marketing service. If you are still shaping the campaign itself, start with the KOL marketing operating guide.
Frequently asked questions
What is a crypto KOL marketplace?
A platform where brands browse crypto creator profiles, post briefs and book posts directly, usually with payment held until the work is approved. It replaces part of an agency's casting work, but not content review or market rule checks.
Is a KOL marketplace cheaper than an agency?
Usually per post, because you do the planning and review yourself. The real comparison is how much of that work your team can absorb and what a wrong post would cost you.
Does escrow protect campaign quality?
Escrow protects you if a post is not delivered. It does not make sure the post reaches the right market, carries the right disclosure or drives results, so define delivery and approval in writing.
Which model works for iGaming brands?
Gambling promotion depends on licences, advertising codes and age rules in each market, and several platforms restrict it. A managed model or a well-briefed in-house team usually fits better than an open marketplace.
Can I combine a marketplace and an agency?
Yes. Some brands test mainstream creators through a marketplace and use an agency for crypto-native KOLs and regulated markets. Keep one conversion definition across both so the results compare.
