Map the recurring work
List creative planning, creator selection, access or shipment, filming, editing, factual review and acceptance. Identify which work already has capacity inside the business and which work repeatedly waits for someone. An agency can fill a gap only when that gap is named.
Do not assume an internal producer can perform every creator role or that an external supplier owns every review decision. Product expertise and qualified legal review may remain with the brand under either route.
Compare accepted output, not delivered files
Count distinct useful assets and identify how many require correction or cannot be used. Three aspect-ratio exports of one concept are different from three original concepts. Keep that definition stable across the comparison.
A hypothetical team receives 20 exports but approves only eight for the intended product task. The production lesson concerns briefing and review, not simply buying more files. Use the accepted unit when estimating effective capacity.
Make internal time visible
Estimate time spent briefing, chasing access, reviewing drafts and coordinating corrections. Label any planning cost rates and utilisation assumptions. Do not invent an industry salary or claim an agency is cheaper without the actual scope and quotes.
Consider variability too. A steady internal team can suit recurring known work, while a short peak may need external capacity. A retainer that goes unused and an internal role overloaded by launches can both be poor fits.

Keep ownership and continuity explicit
Record where masters, briefs, rights and expiry dates live. Confirm which project files and source footage are available at handoff. The Copyright Office’s guidance supports checking the actual ownership and licence rather than assuming all commissioned material becomes unrestricted brand property.
Plan for a producer leaving or a supplier relationship ending. The next team needs enough context to distinguish approved assets from rejected takes and expired licences. A large folder without that record is not durable production capacity.
| Work unit | Internal route | External route |
|---|---|---|
| Product knowledge | Named owner and available review time | Required brand input and response time |
| Creator production | Actual skills and reserved capacity | Contracted performance and coordination |
| Accepted output | Consistent concept and export definition | Same definition, with correction load shown |
| Continuity | Master files, rights and departure plan | Handoff, expiry and relationship-end plan |
Choose the operating split
The answer can be internal product ownership with external creator performance and editing, or a managed commission with defined brand review. Name the interfaces and deadlines. Do not duplicate review layers that nobody has authority to resolve.
3betmedia can discuss the creator and production work that sits outside your team’s capacity. Bring the recurring asset task, accepted-output history and known bottleneck. The comparison should end with accountable work, not a generic claim that outsourcing or hiring always wins.
Use the marketplace-versus-agency comparison when the missing capability is creator discovery rather than internal production capacity.
Frequently asked questions
Should we compare agency cost with salary alone?
No. Compare the full work, accepted capacity, tools, review time and rights under labelled assumptions.
Can both models run together?
Yes, when responsibilities and handoffs are explicit. For example, internal product ownership can work with external creator production.
