Map the work before choosing a supplier
List the product briefing, creator search, contracting, shipment or access, draft review, revisions and final-file acceptance. Give each step an owner. If no one owns claim verification, buying a larger creator pool will not solve the problem.
Current marketplace-versus-agency search results demonstrate a real buying comparison, but suppliers package their services differently. Do not assume a platform is entirely self-service or that an agency provides legal approval. Read the actual scope and identify the person accountable for delivery.
Compare one commission across both routes
Describe the same asset quantity, production task, formats, review rounds and rights term. Ask each supplier what is included and excluded. A marketplace subscription, creator fee and agency project fee are different cost units; their totals become meaningful only after the work is aligned.
Include internal producer time in a planning comparison using a labelled assumption. Do not invent a standard industry hourly rate. Ask who handles an absent creator, a product change or an unusable draft, and which remedy the agreement actually offers.
Keep rights and truthful claims with the decision
A platform’s checkout fields do not guarantee that the licence covers every planned use. Review paid media, channels, territory, duration, edits and source footage. Confirm whether a creator post is purchased separately from content for the brand’s own accounts.
The FTC’s disclosure and endorsement principles still matter where applicable. A supplier does not make a fabricated testimonial acceptable. The buyer must provide supported product facts and ensure the commissioned message accurately represents the creator’s experience.

Use a hypothetical failed-draft test
A fictional app team receives footage of the wrong build. On a self-managed route, its producer must identify the mismatch, brief a correction and track the new delivery. Under a managed scope, the supplier may own those steps, but only if the agreement says so.
Ask both routes to explain that sequence before appointment. The answer reveals more than a claim of access to thousands of creators. A clear revision process can be more useful than a large catalogue when the task requires product accuracy.
| Failure scenario | Question for either route |
|---|---|
| Wrong build filmed | Who verifies the product version before the shoot? |
| Creator unavailable | Who finds a replacement and which terms apply? |
| Draft misses the brief | Who consolidates feedback and owns the correction? |
| Rights do not cover use | Who resolves the licence before publication? |
| Scope changes | Who approves the new fee, deadline and deliverable? |
Choose the missing capability
If your team already owns briefing and review, access to suitable creators may be enough. If your team lacks production capacity, compare managed delivery with hiring an internal producer. A blended arrangement can also work when the responsibilities remain explicit.
3betmedia can discuss creator selection and a defined production scope. Bring the asset task and the work your team can already handle. Do not buy an agency retainer or platform subscription simply to avoid naming the operational gap.
Use the UGC definition guide to separate commissioned footage from creator-channel distribution before comparing suppliers.
Frequently asked questions
Is a marketplace always cheaper?
No. Compare the complete commission, rights, fees and internal work. Access pricing alone does not describe delivered production cost.
Does an agency remove the brand’s review duties?
No. Product facts, rights and applicable advertising review still need named owners. Agree exactly which coordination work the supplier performs.
