Define the relationship before counting the post
Record whether the brand commissioned the content, supplied something of value, contracted through an intermediary or has evidence of a genuinely independent mention. Use a separate unknown category when the team cannot establish the relationship.
Keep the creator, actual post and contracting or gifting record connected. A positive statement does not prove payment, and the absence of a fee in one team’s spreadsheet does not establish editorial independence.
The creator relationship disclosures guide addresses how the audience understands the connection. The reporting record should preserve it too, without substituting a platform label for the underlying facts.
Keep non-cash value visible
The FTC’s US endorsement guidance explains why payments and other value can create a connection relevant to viewers. A product sample or other perk should not disappear from the review because the finance record contains no creator fee.
Ask the responsible owner what the creator received and under what arrangement. Keep the actual evidence and applicable review decision. Do not invent a universal monetary threshold or assume every unsolicited mention falls under the same rule.
For restricted products, the relationship record is only one input. It does not establish audience suitability, product eligibility or the truth of the claims in the post.
Separate commissioned output from later circulation
A creator’s accepted original post, a brand repost and an independent discussion of that post are different items. Link them to their sources so the same asset does not become several invented creator commissions.
| Category | Useful evidence | Avoid claiming |
|---|---|---|
| Commissioned | Accepted scope and actual publication | Independent editorial selection |
| Value supplied | Confirmed sample, benefit or other arrangement | No connection because no cash fee appears |
| Independent observation | Observed post and bounded relationship review | A commissioned deliverable |
| Unresolved | What is known and the missing decision | A convenient organic label |
Adapt the categories to the actual campaign. A reporting taxonomy is not a legal safe harbor.

Do not infer sentiment or independence from a repost
A user may quote a sponsored clip to criticize it, discuss it or point out an error. A repost count does not establish favorable recommendations. Inspect the actual context before using it as an endorsement example.
Preserve the original commercial relationship when the campaign republishes a commissioned asset. Cropping the opening or removing surrounding post copy can change what the next viewer understands.
Follow the actual permissions and disclosure review for the destination. An asset being publicly accessible does not grant the brand every proposed reuse.
An illustrative report has three distinct rows
A fictional brand accepts one paid creator video, supplies a sample to another creator and later observes an unrelated commentary post. The report records each item with its actual evidence and relationship status.
It does not call all three earned recommendations or charge the commentary post against a creator-delivery quota. If the sample recipient’s arrangement is unclear, that row stays unresolved until the responsible owner checks it.
This example is invented. It supplies no campaign reach, fee, sentiment score or client result.
Report delivery before interpreting response
Use the campaign reporting structure to show which commissioned items were accepted and which observations come from wider circulation. Keep metric definitions and windows beside each group.
Views or mentions cannot establish that the audience approved the product or that a specific customer converted. Preserve those questions for their own evidence rather than let one organic-looking headline answer them all.
Bring the relationship record to creator campaign commissioning. Define how the next order will be described before its posts become difficult to distinguish in a shared report.
Frequently asked questions
Does a creator mention become organic when no cash fee was paid?
Check the actual relationship. Samples, perks, intermediaries and other arrangements can matter; a blank fee field is not proof of independence.
Should a brand repost count as another commissioned creator post?
Keep it as a separate circulation item linked to its source. Do not invent another creator deliverable from the same original asset.
Does reposting a sponsored clip mean the user recommends the product?
No. Review the surrounding commentary and relationship evidence before describing the repost as a favorable endorsement.

The relationship categories and fictional reporting example are original operational recommendations. FTC guidance supplies US context for material connections, including non-cash value. No legal determination of an individual mention, earned-coverage guarantee or PR distribution service is supplied.
