Name the relationship before valuing the link
Start with what the brand bought. A commissioned creator article, an affiliate comparison and independently chosen editorial coverage are different relationships. A live URL proves that a page exists; it does not establish who selected the story or whether payment influenced publication.
Ask the supplier to describe the placement in ordinary words. Record who commissions it, who pays, who chooses the text and who may reject a claim. Keep these answers beside the deliverable rather than relying on a logo wall or a phrase such as featured in.
The affiliate and influencer relationship guide separates a publishing commitment from referral compensation. A creator can have both relationships at once. Neither makes a bought article independent reporting.
Treat the HTML attribute and the reader label as separate checks
Google recommends rel="sponsored" for advertising and paid-placement links. It also accepts nofollow for that purpose, although sponsored is preferred. Its ugc value concerns links in user-generated contributions such as comments and forum posts; it is not a blanket licence for a commissioned UGC video.
Those attributes communicate with search systems. They do not by themselves tell a person reading the article that a commercial relationship exists. Review the visible label and its context through the actual publisher and the brand’s responsible reviewer.
Conversely, a visible paid-partnership statement does not tell you the HTML relationship value. A useful acceptance record includes both observations. Do not replace one with the other or assume that a screenshot of a brand name proves either.
Use a placement record with independently checkable fields
For each commissioned page, retain its final URL, publisher account or byline, date checked and intended destination. Add the promised placement type, observed disclosure and actual link relationship. Record restrictions and unanswered questions without converting them into a pass.
| Question | Evidence | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Was the content published? | Final page and agreed creator identity | Independent editorial selection |
| Is the relationship visible? | Reader-facing label in context | A particular HTML attribute |
| Where does the link go? | Observed destination and redirects | Qualified traffic or sales |
| How is it qualified? | Actual anchor markup | A ranking gain or an indexing decision |
Keep the review scoped to the accepted order. The creator content production scope can help define the work and its evidence. Do not silently replace that commission with a PR-distribution, media-buying or search-ranking guarantee.

Check the article people actually receive
Open the page in the viewing context the campaign expects. Read the headline, introduction, comparison and closing action. Check whether a qualification has moved into a collapsed section, whether the link points to the current offer and whether the creator’s role remains understandable.
For casino affiliate content, have the responsible owner confirm the operator, destination and audience eligibility for the actual market. A technically qualified link does not approve a gambling promotion or cure an unsupported product claim.
Use the creator disclosure examples to frame the review discussion. The acceptance decision still needs the actual relationship and format. Do not copy a label from another campaign and call it universally sufficient.
A fictional placement changes from reporting to advertorial
Suppose a fictional brand orders an article described as editorial coverage. The delivered page is a commissioned contributor post with a commercial label. It contains the agreed product explanation and a functioning link, but its relationship to the publisher differs from the buyer’s understanding.
The buyer records that distinction and asks the contracting party to reconcile the deliverable against the order. It does not remove the label, request an unqualified paid link or describe the page as independently selected merely because the wording sounds like reporting.
If the parties accept the corrected placement description, the report uses it consistently. This is an invented procurement example, not a client dispute or a claim that one category of page always produces better results.
Report delivery without turning it into search proof
Count accepted pages and links as the deliverables they are. Report visits or other outcomes only from the agreed evidence source and window. A published page, a qualified link and a tracked visit answer different questions.
Do not promise that a particular relationship value transfers authority, prevents every search issue or guarantees discovery. Google’s link-label guidance does not establish a campaign’s traffic or commercial outcome.
Bring the proposed format, publisher, destination and acceptance terms to the planning call. A clear commission lets both sides verify what went live without disguising paid work as independent praise.
Frequently asked questions
Does a sponsored link label mean the placement failed?
No. It identifies a relationship rather than measuring campaign success. Judge delivery against the accepted commission and evaluate outcomes from the agreed evidence, not from an expectation that paid links must look independent.
Is a visible ad label the same as rel sponsored?
No. One is a reader-facing observation; the other is an HTML relationship value. Review both in the actual context without treating either as a universal legal or search-performance guarantee.
Can a creator promise rankings from a paid article link?
A publishing commitment does not establish a search engine outcome. Keep the accepted page, destination, relationship and any observed results separate in the scope and report.

The placement checklist and fictional review example are original buying aids. Google documentation supports the limited HTML-label facts. A search relationship attribute is not a legal opinion, editorial endorsement or promise of rankings.
