Write down what the code actually controls
Determine whether the code assigns a referral, unlocks an offer, affects commission or does several jobs. Record the precedence rules when a link, another code or an existing customer relationship is present. Do not assume every operator implements the same logic.
impact.com’s promo-code documentation illustrates configured code-based credit. Arena’s terms define its own promotional-code attribution. These are mechanisms for assigning credit, not proof that every code user watched the creator or was persuaded by the sponsored content.
Look for distribution beyond the intended surface
Codes can appear in deal pages, messages, reposted clips or another creator’s chat. Review publicly available examples and the timing of aggregate code activity through authorised reports. Do not access private communities or identify individual players without a legitimate authorised basis.
A sudden code increase deserves investigation, not an immediate accusation. The campaign itself may have produced a widely shared clip. A code can spread organically without demonstrating the same audience path as a direct click from the original broadcast.
Use a hypothetical attribution conflict
An invented campaign books streamer A, whose code later appears on a public offer page. A player encounters the offer page after seeing creator B’s content and uses A’s code. The contract may credit A. The observed journey does not establish that A alone caused the acquisition.
Report the payable rule and the interpretation separately. Do not count one player as independently acquired by both creators. When journey evidence is incomplete, retain that uncertainty rather than assigning a confident causal story.

Define an exception process before launch
Agree permitted code distribution, monitoring responsibility and how an unintended public posting is handled. Ask whether codes expire, whether existing-account use is possible and what evidence can change commission. A new exception after results arrive can undermine trust and conflict with the agreement.
Do not silently remove accepted conversions because the source feels inconvenient. Use the contractual rule, authorised evidence and dispute route. Correct the campaign controls prospectively where appropriate and preserve earlier statement versions.
| Record | What it can establish | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Configured rule | How credit is assigned | Not causal influence |
| Public code appearance | Observed redistribution and date | Not the identity or motive of every user |
| Aggregate activity | Timing and accepted actions under the rule | Not a full personal journey |
| Exception decision | Contractual treatment and supported correction | Not permission to erase inconvenient results |
Use codes alongside other evidence
Retain accepted live delivery, dated links and permitted aggregate funnel data. These records can explain why activity changed, but they do not eliminate all attribution uncertainty. Avoid tracking schemes that bypass platform privacy rules or attempt to reconstruct a player’s identity.
For a renewal decision, distinguish content delivered, contractual acquisitions credited and confidence in the creator’s contribution. That is more useful than a single “creator ROI” number built on the assumption that a code never leaves its original channel.
Use a cohort payback calculation only after explaining the attribution limits of the code-based acquisition count.
Frequently asked questions
Does code leakage mean the creator cheated?
No. Codes can spread through ordinary sharing or third parties. Investigate supported evidence and apply the agreed distribution and attribution rules.
Should leaked-code conversions always be removed?
Not automatically. Contractual credit and causal interpretation are different matters. Use the applicable terms and documented exception process.
