UGC B-Roll Shot List: Make the Footage Reusable

Reusable B-roll gives an editor complete actions and clear context. A folder of random close-ups can look busy while leaving the main product explanation impossible to cut.

Start from the edit’s missing evidence

List the moments the message needs: product identification, the action being explained and the visible supported result. Then decide which moments need wider context and which need detail. Avoid ordering a fixed number of shots before the editor knows what they must prove.

Creator briefing resources such as Insense’s guide establish the shot list as a real production handoff. Build your own list from the actual product and claim record rather than copying a generic unboxing sequence into a software or regulated-product brief.

Commission complete actions

Give each shot a start state, action and end state. Ask for a clean hold before and after movement so the editor can enter and leave the shot. Record separate actions separately where practical; one continuous take can make a later correction expensive.

A hypothetical app commission needs a clean opening screen, a deliberate tap on the named feature and the resulting approved state. A fast screen recording that jumps across unrelated features may contain the same pixels but fails the editing task.

Keep continuity deliberate

Specify orientation, lighting, product version and any visible wardrobe or hand position that must match. If variation is intentional, label it. The editor should not discover that the product changes colour or the interface changes version halfway through a supposedly continuous action.

For physical products, record which packaging and supplied accessories appear. For screens, use approved test data and hide notifications. Do not include private customer details simply because the footage is intended to be raw.

Separate technical delivery and rights

Agree resolution, frame rate, file naming and transfer method with the editor. State whether audio is needed and whether slow motion is a planned requirement. Do not ask for an arbitrary high frame rate that makes the actual lighting or screen capture worse.

The rights schedule must cover the intended edits and uses. Music, other people and background media can limit reuse. The Copyright Office is a primary reference for the rights question; possession of raw files alone does not establish a universal licence.

Review a rough assembly before scaling

Test whether a small set of shots can support the planned explanation. If the editor cannot show the essential action, correct the shot list before commissioning more creators. More footage of the same incomplete action will not fix the missing moment.

Accept against the shot IDs and known constraints. Keep rejected takes labelled rather than mixing them with approved material. 3betmedia can discuss a creator and editing brief built around those specific gaps, with source footage and reuse scoped explicitly.

A faceless UGC brief should specify the product action before the B-roll list expands it into shots.

Frequently asked questions

How many B-roll shots should we buy?

Enough complete, distinct actions to support the intended edits. Start with the message and assembly test rather than a universal shot count.

Are raw files automatically reusable forever?

No. Delivery and licence are separate. Agree permitted edits, channels, territory and duration.
