Choose the visual evidence
Hands-only product use, a controlled screen recording and a voice-led walkthrough solve different tasks. Pick the action the audience needs to understand. Do not commission a collection of attractive desk shots when the message requires proof of a specific product step.
This is a production format, not an anonymity guarantee. Reflections, tattoos, background material and a recognisable voice can still identify someone. Ask the creator what may appear and review the actual frame before making a privacy promise.
Write a shot-led brief
Describe the product state before the action, the action itself and the visible result. Specify framing, orientation and any supplied test environment. Give the editor a clean pause before and after each movement instead of a hurried continuous recording that cannot be recut.
For a hypothetical wallet navigation clip, record the approved interface with test data and no secrets. The hand or cursor shows the relevant control while the voice explains the supported function. Do not display a private key, customer notification or real financial balance to create apparent authenticity.
Keep experience claims truthful
A hidden face does not turn an actor into a real customer. If the voice claims personal experience, establish that it is genuine and supported. Otherwise use a product demonstration framed accurately as commissioned content.
The FTC’s endorsement guidance addresses truthful experience and material connections where it applies. A brand should not ask for an invented “I made money” story or disguise a paid script as independent advice. Informal camera work is a style choice, not a disclosure exemption.

Check audio and third-party material
Decide whether the creator supplies voice, captions or silent footage only. Confirm who may edit or localise the recording. A licence for one voiceover does not imply permission to generate a digital replica or reuse the voice for a different product.
Review music, background screens and visible packaging. The Copyright Office’s guidance supports resolving rights for the actual use. A trending sound or another person’s video playing behind the product may not be cleared for the intended advertisement.
| Format | Useful evidence | Review concern |
|---|---|---|
| Hands-only action | Complete physical task in frame | Continuity, reflections and incidental identifiers |
| Screen-led walkthrough | Named feature in the approved build | Secrets, notifications and private account data |
| Voice-led explanation | Clear supported account of the action | Invented experience or unlicensed voice reuse |
| Silent footage | Usable detail for a defined edit | Meaning depends on later captions and context |
Accept the task, not the absence of a face
Watch the final asset without the brief. Can the viewer identify the product action and understand its limits? Check legibility on a phone, continuity between shots and whether captions obscure the demonstration. Request a correction tied to a specific departure.
A faceless commission can be useful when the product action deserves the frame. It is a poor shortcut when the message depends on a genuine person’s story. Bring the action and intended use to a production call so the creator is selected for the right performance.
Use a B-roll shot list when the faceless footage needs to support several edits.
Frequently asked questions
Is faceless UGC anonymous?
Not necessarily. Voice, reflections and other details can identify a person. Agree the privacy constraints and inspect the actual footage.
Can an actor claim to be a long-term user?
Only if that experience is genuine and the representation is truthful. Otherwise commission an accurately framed demonstration.
