Name the job on the main broadcast
Start with the on-air contribution. Play-by-play follows the action; analysis explains decisions and context. A desk host manages introductions and transitions. One person may cover several duties in a small show, but the proposal should still say which duties they accept.
This guide is for buyers commissioning gaming creators, not people seeking caster jobs. Broadcast marketplaces such as Standby distinguish casters from observers, producers and audio technicians. A commentary booking should not quietly include every one of those jobs.
3betmedia's streamer campaign service covers creator selection, briefs and coordination. Discuss the proposed commentary contribution and its feasibility before treating a creator as booked. This page offers no specialist caster roster, tournament operations team or production crew.
If the creator will react on their own channel to someone else's event, use the esports watch-party hiring guide. Here, the creator joins the originating show's commentary team and works from that production's approved inputs.
Audition the actual commentary task
Review a recent full match sample for the relevant game. Listen for accurate terminology, useful explanations and room for the other voice. A highlight reel full of excited reactions can hide whether someone follows a quiet round or corrects a mistaken call.
Ask the proposed creator which game version and competitive format they know. Give them the confirmed rules, team names and pronunciation notes. Playing a game well does not establish knowledge of every current tournament rule, and a follower count says little about working with a producer.
If two people will share the desk, review a joint sample or agree a paid rehearsal. Check how they hand over between action and analysis. Do not ask for substantial unpaid production as an audition, or assume a familiar streaming partnership will suit the proposed broadcast.
Separate talent from the people supplying the picture
Name the person responsible for each input. The commentator needs the intended match view, game audio and a reliable route for production cues. The observer chooses the in-game picture; the producer controls the programme; the tournament administrator confirms official match decisions. Define your actual team's allocation rather than expecting the talent to infer it.
The record below is an original buying aid. It does not prescribe a software stack or a standard crew size.
| Dependency | Confirm with the buyer | Rehearsal check |
|---|---|---|
| On-air role | Action calling, analysis, hosting or a defined combination | The pair understands who leads each segment |
| Match picture | Observer and approved feed route | Talent sees the intended action without an unintended public-stream delay |
| Audio and cues | Audio owner, talkback route and mute responsibility | Talent hears cues without sending private production talk on air |
| Official decisions | Named tournament administrator | Unconfirmed scores and rulings stay qualified |
| Sponsor segments | Permitted script, disclosure and cue owner | Reads fit the agreed break and retain their meaning |
| Failure handling | Who pauses, replaces or extends a contribution | Everyone knows the fallback contact and authority |

Price the booked work, including preparation
Request separate lines for preparation, rehearsal, live attendance and any later recordings. State the expected session window, breaks and what happens if the running order changes. A day rate without an attendance boundary leaves the buyer and creator with different assumptions.
Confirm whether the creator contributes remotely or on site, who supplies equipment and how approved expenses are handled. Adding interviews, social posts or another language changes the work. List those items before comparing proposals rather than treating them as free extras.
Use the streamer term-sheet guide to record changes, substitution, payment and reuse questions for qualified counsel. This article gives no market rate or automatic refund entitlement. The purchased work must remain understandable even when audience metrics are uncertain.
Resolve event and sponsor eligibility before the read
A talent agreement cannot grant the rights to operate or broadcast a game tournament. Ask the organiser for the applicable publisher framework and the event's actual permission status. Confirm the commercial sponsor separately from the right to show the competition.
For example, Riot's current VALORANT community guidelines exclude gambling, sportsbooks, casinos, cryptocurrencies and NFTs as sponsors. Corporate brands that are not established tournament organisers, and events run on their behalf, are outside that community licence and need a separate agreement. Those are VALORANT-specific checks, not universal rules for every game.
Do not disguise an excluded sponsor or assume another organiser's name fixes eligibility. If a required permission is unresolved, hold the affected booking. 3betmedia does not issue publisher licences or approve a tournament through this guide.
For US-facing endorsements, the FTC recommends clear disclosure and periodic repetition during a livestream. Give talent the approved wording and its limits. A sponsor read must not invent personal product use, winnings or investment outcomes, even if the delivery is conversational.
A hypothetical result correction during the show
Suppose a fictional tournament has two creators on its main commentary feed. The on-screen graphic marks a team as the winner, but the administrator is still reviewing a disputed round. The analyst hears an unverified result in the production chat.
The team follows the agreed authority route: the commentator describes the visible position without announcing an official winner. The producer requests the administrator's decision and corrects the graphic if needed. Talent does not turn a private rumour into a confident result to fill the silence.
If an incorrect announcement already aired, the producer and commentator agree a clear correction and log its timestamp. They preserve the original issue in the internal delivery record. This is an invented production example, not an incident involving a client or a claim that any technical system prevents all errors.
Accept the contribution, then review audience response
Check the delivered role against the booking: rehearsal attendance, the agreed on-air window, sponsor wording and any contracted follow-up. Use the broadcast delivery checklist for timestamped evidence and exceptions. Keep a producer's feed failure separate from a creator missing an agreed contribution.
Record who can retain the programme and which clips the brand may reuse. Game footage, other speakers, music and the creator's performance may involve different permissions. A recording in the shared drive does not make every derivative an approved advertisement.
Evaluate audience response with its actual source and reporting window. Hiring a commentator does not buy their followers unless separate promotion is contracted, and it does not guarantee viewers, registrations or sales. Delivery acceptance and the next campaign's commercial decision should remain distinguishable.
Bring the game, event owner, production contact, desired role and planned sponsor to the hiring call. Those inputs let the team assess a feasible creator brief without promising a production capability or named talent it has not confirmed.
Frequently asked questions
Does hiring a streamer as a commentator include their own channel audience?
No. A contribution to the tournament's main broadcast does not include a post or stream on the creator's account unless those deliverables are separately agreed.
Can the commentator also run the observer feed and production?
Only if those duties are explicitly scoped and the person can deliver them. Name each role and test the actual arrangement rather than treating commentary as an all-in broadcast package.
Who confirms an official result during a creator-hosted tournament broadcast?
The organiser should name the authorised tournament administrator. Commentators can explain the action but should keep provisional information qualified until that authority confirms the result.
